It is reported that the RAN6 working group is mainly responsible for studying 2G and 3G wireless functions, and defining specifications and interfaces involving GSM/EDGE radio access network (GERAN) and UMTS radio access network (UTRAN).

In fact, as early as 1998, standard setting organizations from Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, and North America jointly established 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Organization) to jointly develop detailed next-generation mobile communication network (3G) standards.

At the same time, 3GPP has also accepted the work of maintaining and continuing to develop GSM specifications. The project successfully promoted the evolution from 2G to 3G, and successfully realized the global popularization of 3G.
