Ordinary mobile phone can optionally be used as a jammer
According to a recent study, a jammer can be used with a normal cell phone. It can even lead to mobile network failure in a larger region if the attack is operated with multiple mobile phones. For legal reasons, however, a warning must be given before trying it.
Apparently cell phones can easily be turned into signal jammer. Anyway, several computer scientists from TU Berlin affirmed this during the Usenix security symposium, which was held in Washington D.C. from August 14, 2013 to August 18, 2013. took place and presented a study interesting.
As a result, computer scientists have reportedly developed open-source software that appears to be able to exploit a vulnerability in the GSM radio standard. Pretending an incorrect identity is to prevent text messages or phone calls from going through radio masts.
Large possible impact on the cellular network
According to this study, the use of 12 mobile phones as jammers should already lead to a paralysis of mobile phone reception in a district of Berlin. More information is available in an English article. A demonstration video can also be viewed.
